The hammam, or steam bath, is a centuries-old Moroccan tradition of washing, relaxing and socialising. Most neighbourhoods have a public hammam, and many riads and hotels offer a spa version for visitors. A visit leaves your skin soft and your body relaxed, and it is one of the best ways to experience everyday Morocco.

Two kinds of hammam
- Public (local) hammam: cheap, simple and sociable. Men and women use separate hammams, or the same hammam at different times. You usually bring your own towel, soap and glove, or buy them there.
- Spa hammam: found in riads, hotels and tourist-oriented spas. It is more private, with packages that include scrubs, massage and argan oil. It costs more but is easier for first-timers.
What happens during a hammam
- You undress to your underwear or swimsuit bottoms and enter the warm room.
- You are rubbed with savon beldi, a black olive-oil soap, and rest in the steam to soften the skin.
- An attendant scrubs you with a rough kessa glove, removing dead skin.
- You are rinsed with buckets of warm water.
- Optional treatments include a ghassoul (rhassoul) clay wrap for skin and hair, and a massage.
What to bring
- A towel and flip-flops, plus a change of clothes.
- Swimsuit bottoms or disposable underwear.
- Shampoo and a bottle of water; spa hammams usually provide products.
- Small change for tips.
Etiquette
- Stay modest and respect privacy. Do not photograph inside.
- Follow the attendants' guidance, and tell them if the water or scrub is too hot or too rough.
- Tip attendants a small amount, usually 10 to 20 dirhams in a local hammam, or about 10 percent at a spa.
- Drink water, rest afterwards, and avoid heavy exercise.
Health and safety
Avoid the hammam if you are unwell, pregnant, or have a heart condition or low blood pressure, unless a doctor approves. Take breaks if you feel dizzy, and do not stay too long in the hot room.
Where to try one
Marrakech and Fes have many spa hammams in historic buildings, while local hammams exist in every medina. Your riad can recommend a trusted one. The Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca also has a monumental traditional hammam in its lower level, which is part of the architecture, though not open as a bathing spa. See our architecture guide for how tadelakt plaster is used in hammams, and the travel tips for general advice.
Frequently asked questions
What should you wear in a Moroccan hammam?
Swimsuit bottoms or underwear for both men and women; spas often provide disposable underwear.
Is a hammam suitable for first-timers?
Yes. A spa hammam is easier for first-timers because attendants explain the steps and the setting is private.
How much should you tip at a hammam?
A small tip is customary. In a public hammam 10 to 20 dirhams is typical; at a spa, about 10 percent.
