A camel caravan crossing the dunes at sunset in the Moroccan Sahara

A night in the Sahara is a highlight of most Morocco trips: camel rides at sunset, tea in the dunes, stars you will not see in a city and a sunrise over the sand. The two main areas are Merzouga in the east and Zagora and M'Hamid in the south. Here is how to choose, and how to book a good trip.

If you are travelling between Marrakech and Fes, choose Merzouga. If you are short of time and based in Marrakech, Zagora is the easier option, though M'Hamid and Erg Chigaga need extra time.

Typical tour lengths

  • 2 days (Zagora): possible from Marrakech, but very rushed.
  • 3 days (Merzouga): Marrakech to Merzouga to Fes, via Ouarzazate and Tinghir. The most popular option.
  • 4 days or more: add extra nights in the valleys, Erg Chigaga or a longer trek.

What to expect at a desert camp

You usually arrive at sunset on a camel, then have dinner, music and tea around a fire. Camps range from simple tents with shared bathrooms to luxury tents with private bathrooms and beds. Nights can be cold in winter, so check blankets and heating. Sunrise from the dunes is worth the early wake-up.

How to choose a tour operator

  • Read recent reviews and ask for a written itinerary that lists meals, accommodation and transport.
  • Check group size, vehicle type and what is included, such as camel rides, tips and water.
  • Ask for the exact camp, its facilities and its distance from the dunes.
  • Avoid very cheap offers, which often involve long drives, large groups or poor camps.
  • Think about the animals: well-cared-for camels, and avoid quad bikes, which damage the dunes.

What to pack

  • Warm layers, a scarf or turban cloth and sunglasses.
  • Closed shoes for walking in sand, and sandals.
  • Sun cream, a hat and lip balm.
  • A head torch, power bank and a small bag for overnight items, since main luggage often stays in the vehicle.
  • Cash for tips and drinks.

Best time for the desert

October to April is the best period. Spring days are warm, while winter nights can be near freezing. Summer is extremely hot, and spring can bring sandstorms. See when to visit Morocco, and add the desert to our 7-day itinerary.
