Dakhla Travel Guide: Kitesurfing, Lagoon & Desert Coast

Dakhla is a remote town on a long sandy peninsula in southern Morocco, where the Sahara meets the Atlantic. A sheltered lagoon with warm, shallow water and constant wind has made it one of the world's top kitesurfing destinations. It is also a place for birdwatching, desert trips and a different side of Morocco.

Kitesurfing and watersports
The Dakhla lagoon has flat, shallow water and consistent wind, ideal for learners and experienced riders. Schools run lessons and rent equipment, and many camps are on the lagoon shore. The windiest months are generally spring to autumn. Wind and sea conditions change, so check with your school.
The white dune and lagoon
About 40 km south of town, the white dune rises from the lagoon, and you can walk or take a boat to reach it. Sunsets over the water are memorable. Bring sun protection and water.
Desert and ocean excursions
Day trips go to the sand dunes, the old Spanish fort, Imlili and Lagoon islands, and boat tours to spot flamingos, pelicans and dolphins. In some seasons you can see migratory birds in large numbers.
Food
Dakhla is known for its seafood, especially oysters raised in the lagoon, fresh fish and prawns. Try grilled fish at the port. See our food guide.
Getting there and around
Dakhla is more than 1,500 km from Casablanca, so most visitors fly, with domestic flights from Casablanca and other cities, and some seasonal European routes. Rental cars and taxis are available locally. See getting around Morocco.
Practical tips
- Pack layers and a windproof jacket; evenings are cool.
- Book accommodation and lessons in advance for peak kitesurf season.
- Take sun protection, as UV levels are high.
Choosing a kitesurf camp
Dakhla has camps on both the lagoon and the Atlantic side. Lagoon camps are best for beginners, with shallow flat water, while the ocean side has bigger waves for experienced riders. Check that your school is certified, has rescue boats and provides up-to-date equipment. Lessons typically last several days, and you will need good sun protection and a wetsuit in winter.
Beyond kitesurfing
- Birdwatching: flamingos, pelicans and migratory birds use the lagoon.
- Quad and 4x4 trips: follow marked routes and use responsible operators.
- Oyster tasting: farms in the lagoon serve oysters straight from the water.
- Stargazing: the desert skies are exceptionally clear.
A different Morocco
Dakhla feels very different from the north. Distances are huge, the climate is dry and windy, and the cultural mix reflects the Sahrawi communities of the south. Check your government's current travel advice for the region before you plan a trip, and bring your passport for police checkpoints along the road.
Packing list
- Windproof jacket, hat and sunglasses.
- High-factor sun cream and lip balm.
- Reef shoes for walking in the lagoon.
- A scarf for dusty days.
