Merzouga and Erg Chebbi: Dunes, Camps and What to Know

Updated · by The Magic Morocco · 3 min read

Sand dunes in the Sahara

Merzouga is a small village on the edge of Erg Chebbi, the sea of golden dunes that most people picture when they think of the Moroccan Sahara. It is far from everything, and that is the appeal: a night under the stars, silence and big skies.

What to do in Merzouga

  • Camel trek at sunset: typically one to two hours into the dunes, then a night at a camp. Choose a camp well before dark so you are not rushed.
  • Dune walk at sunrise: climb a high dune on foot. It is harder than it looks, but the views are worth it.
  • Sandboarding and 4x4 trips are available. Quad bikes damage dunes and scare wildlife, so we suggest skipping them.
  • Stargazing: with little light pollution the sky is dazzling. Bring a warm layer.

Villages and sights nearby

  • Khamlia: a village known for Gnawa music, with musicians who play for visitors.
  • Rissani: a market town and the historic centre of the Tafilalet oasis, with a lively souk on market days.
  • Dayet Srji: a seasonal lake that can attract flamingos after rain.
  • Fossil workshops around Erfoud: look but be sceptical about claims of rarity.

How to get there

There is no quick way. From Fes it is a full day via Ifrane, Midelt and the Ziz valley. From Marrakech it is a two-day trip with a stop at Ait Benhaddou and Tinghir. Errachidia airport is a couple of hours away, but flights are limited. Most visitors book a tour or a driver; see Sahara desert tours for choosing an operator.

Camps: what to ask

  • How far is the camp from the village, and do you reach it by camel or 4x4?
  • What are the tents like? Are there private bathrooms?
  • Is heating or extra blankets provided in winter?
  • Are meals and breakfast included?
  • Is there loud music late at night? Some camps are party-style, others are quiet.

Climate

Days are hot even in winter sun, and nights can be close to freezing from December to February. Summer temperatures often exceed 40 degrees, and spring brings wind and sandstorms. October to April is the best season. See when to visit Morocco.

Merzouga or Zagora?

Merzouga has the tallest, most photogenic dunes and is easier to link with Fes. Zagora and M'Hamid are closer to Marrakech and are quieter. See the comparison in the Sahara guide.

Respect the place

Take your litter with you, ask before photographing local people, and agree prices for extras in advance. The desert economy is fragile, and thoughtful visitors make a difference.
