Choose Marrakech if

  • It is your first visit to Morocco and you have a week or less.
  • You want gardens, pools, rooftop dinners and easy day trips.
  • You like a city that has things to do at night.

Choose Fes if

  • You care more about craft, history and atmosphere than comfort.
  • You enjoy walking all day and getting lost in alleys.
  • You want a city that feels less shaped around visitors.

What it is like to walk around

Marrakech's medina is broad and often busy with scooters, so you spend half the time stepping aside. Fes el-Bali is quieter in the sense that there are no motorbikes, but the alleys are narrower, steeper and far more numerous. You will feel lost in both. The difference is that Marrakech has landmarks (the Koutoubia, the square) to find your way back, and Fes mostly does not. A paid guide for half a day in Fes is money well spent.

Bab Boujloud, the main entrance to the Fes medina, is the usual starting point.

Do both

If you can, see both. The two cities are about 530 km apart by road, so most visitors link them with a desert stop in between, as in our 7-day itinerary and 10-day route. Otherwise, fly or take the train, which is most of a day.
