Zagora Travel Guide: Draa Valley & Sahara Dunes

Zagora is a desert town on the Draa river in southern Morocco, surrounded by palm groves and framed by Jebel Zagora. It is a traditional starting point for camel treks and a quieter, more traditional alternative to Merzouga. A famous sign on the edge of town says Timbuktu is 52 days away by camel, recalling the old caravan routes.

Desert experiences
From Zagora or M'Hamid, you can ride camels or take 4x4 trips to desert camps near Erg Chigaga and Erg Lehoudi, where you can watch sunset and sunrise from the dunes. Nights are quiet and starry. Compare the options in our Sahara desert tour guide.
Getting to Zagora
From Marrakech the road crosses the Tizi n'Tichka pass and passes Ait Benhaddou and Ouarzazate, taking around 7 to 8 hours by road. Most visitors do it with a tour or a rental car, with a stop in Ouarzazate. Buses and shared taxis also run from Ouarzazate. Read more in getting around Morocco.
Best time to visit
October to April is the best period. Summer temperatures often exceed 40°C, and winters can be cold at night. See when to visit Morocco.
Tips
- Bring layers: desert nights are cold even when days are warm.
- Agree the itinerary, meals and price in writing with the tour operator before departure.
- Take cash, as ATMs are limited.
A simple two-day plan
Day 1: leave Marrakech early, cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass, visit Ait Benhaddou and have lunch in Ouarzazate, then follow the Draa valley to Zagora for the night. Day 2: walk in the palm grove in the morning, visit Tamegroute, then continue to M'Hamid for a camel ride and a night in the dunes, or return north.
Tamegroute and M'Hamid
Tamegroute is home to a historic library attached to a Sufi lodge, which holds manuscripts on religion, astronomy, medicine and mathematics, and to potters who fire distinctive green-glazed bowls and tagines. M'Hamid El Ghizlane, about 90 km further south, is where the paved road ends and the desert begins. A nomads' festival is usually held there in spring, so check dates if you want to time your trip.
Where to stay
Options include kasbah-style guesthouses in the palm grove, mid-range hotels in Zagora town and tented camps in the dunes. Ask whether heating and blankets are provided in winter, and whether your price includes dinner and breakfast.
Common mistakes
- Trying to do Marrakech to the dunes and back in 48 hours. The distances are long and the experience suffers.
- Booking the cheapest tour without checking group size, camp location and what is included.
- Forgetting cash, since ATMs are scarce beyond Zagora town.
