Ait Benhaddou ksar reflected in the river near Ouarzazate

Ait Benhaddou is a cluster of rammed-earth towers and houses climbing a hillside above a river, on the old caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, and it has doubled for ancient cities in many films.

What it is

A ksar is a fortified village of earthen houses, and Ait Benhaddou is the best-preserved in southern Morocco. Most of the buildings you see date from the 17th century, and are made of rammed earth and mud brick, which needs regular repair because rain erodes it. A handful of families still live inside, while most residents now live in the new village across the river.

Why people recognise it

The ksar has appeared in films and TV shows including Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Game of Thrones. The studios in nearby Ouarzazate have used the region for decades.

Visiting

  • Cross the river on the stepping stones or the footbridge and wander up through the lanes.
  • Climb to the old granary at the top for views over the valley and the Atlas. Allow time and carry water.
  • Small shops and galleries sell crafts and paintings; some householders will invite you in to see their home and ask for a small tip.
  • You do not need a guide, though a local one can explain the buildings.

Best time of day

At sunrise and in the last hour of the day, the walls glow orange and the crowds thin. Midday is hot and tour buses pile in. If you stay overnight, you get both.

Where to stay

There are guesthouses and kasbah hotels across the river with terraces facing the ksar. Staying one night turns a hurried stop into a highlight. It is also a natural break between Marrakech and the desert.

Getting there

By road from Marrakech it is about four hours over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at around 2,260 m, with stunning views and many bends. If you are not driving yourself, join a tour or hire a driver. Buses run to Ouarzazate, with taxis for the last stretch. See getting around.

Nearby

  • Telouet: the old Glaoui kasbah, on a side road off the pass.
  • Atlas Film Studios: in Ouarzazate, for a look at the sets.
  • Fint Oasis: a quiet palm grove near Ouarzazate.
