Legzira Beach Guide: Sea Arches on Morocco's Atlantic Coast

Legzira is one of Morocco's most photographed beaches, a long stretch of sand backed by rust-red sandstone cliffs carved by the Atlantic into natural arches. It lies on the south-west coast near Sidi Ifni, a day trip or overnight stop from Agadir for those who enjoy wild, uncrowded landscapes.

The arches
Wind and waves have sculpted the soft red cliffs over thousands of years. One of the two famous arches collapsed in 2016, a reminder of how quickly the coast changes. The remaining formations still glow orange and red at sunset, and walking underneath them at low tide is the main attraction.
Tides and safety
The beach is best explored at low tide, when you can walk between the cliffs and arches. At high tide, water reaches the cliffs and the passage can be cut off. Check tide times, keep an eye on the waves and never shelter under overhanging rock. The Atlantic can be rough, so swimming is not always safe.
Sidi Ifni
The nearby town of Sidi Ifni was a Spanish enclave until 1969, and still has Art Deco buildings from that era, a lighthouse and a relaxed seaside atmosphere. It is a good place to stay and eat fresh fish.
Where to stay and eat
Simple guesthouses and cliff-top hotels overlook the beach, and small restaurants serve grilled fish and tagines. Camping and overnight stays in vans are popular, but follow local rules and keep the beach clean.
How to get there
The beach is about 190 km south of Agadir, roughly 3 hours by car, and 10 km from Sidi Ifni. Buses run from Agadir to Sidi Ifni, and taxis cover the final stretch. It combines well with Paradise Valley and Taroudant on a longer trip. See getting around Morocco.
When to go for the best photographs
Arrive about two hours before sunset, when the tide is low and the cliffs turn deep orange. The arches face the sea, so they look best in late light. Early morning is calmer and less crowded, though the colours are more muted.
Walking the beach
The beach stretches for several kilometres, and the walk between the arches and the dunes is a pleasant way to spend an hour or two. Wear shoes you do not mind getting wet, and avoid climbing on cliffs or arches, which are unstable.
Staying overnight
A few cliff-top guesthouses and campsites sit above the beach, and watching the sun set and rise over the Atlantic makes the effort worthwhile. In Sidi Ifni, you will find more hotels, restaurants and supplies.
Combine it with the south-west
A loop that includes Agadir, Taroudant, Paradise Valley and Legzira makes a rewarding four-day trip for travellers with a car. Check the road conditions in winter and avoid driving after dark.
